ON THE EDUCATION OF LITTLE PAULA

by Jerome

(Letter 107 to Laeta)

Laeta

Laeta Laeta married Paula the elder’s son Toxotius and was the mother of little Paula. According to Letter 108 Laeta vowed herself to perpetual chastity after her husband died in 403 and remained in Rome until her death before 419. She is mentioned in Jerome’s Letters 108 and 153.

Paula

Paula the younger was born around 400, the granddaughter of Paula the elder and the daughter of Toxotius and Laeta. According to Jerome’s Letter 108, she was dedicated to a life of chastity. She seems to have been in Palestine during 416–19, probably with her aunt Eustochium, and again in the 430s when she visited Melania the younger, who is said to have shown Paula the way to God. Paula is mentioned in Jerome’s Letters 108, 134, 137, 142, 143 and 153.
